The art of block printing is a tradition that has been passed down through generations throughout the world. It is a craft that requires great skill and is mostly still done by hand. While the techniques have been known in many parts of the world, India in particular has had a longstanding relationship with the art and creates patterns that are not only beautiful but unique to their culture.
This past week the Valparaiso International Center hosted its 4th Friday event Focus on India at The Welcome Mat’s grand opening. Among the other fair trade items to be found at the store are some block printed tablecloths from Handmade Expressions, a fair trade wholesaler that works with underprivileged/disadvantaged artisans and strives to improve their economic and social standing by creating self sustainable employment throughout India. These tablecloths traditionally come from the Barmer region in the state of Rajasthan. For many families in the villages of Bangru and Shanganer the production of these pieces is their main source of income. This week the Welcome Mat is excited to highlight these block-printed tablecloths that we offer at our store.
The block printing process requires the patience and cooperation of many different skilled artisans throughout the production process. It begins with a master carver etching or lightly tracing a pattern onto a block of wood. Once the pattern is finalized, it is hand carved into the wood. There is very little room for error in such a detailed process. After all, once wood is carved it stays carved and any mistakes require the artisan to start over from the beginning.
The minute detail that is put into these designs is astounding. More than one block is used for each pattern. A separate block is made for each color and design with the most intricate block used to create the outline of the pattern. Then, simpler blocks will be used to fill in the other details and colors of the pattern. The more complicated prints require upwards of 2,000 individual stamps before the piece is finished.
The most experienced printers create the first border outline, while less experienced artisans and apprentices finish the design. These tablecloths require skill, teamwork, and a great deal of patience to make the beautiful finalized prints that we offer in the store.
These tablecloths are just one of the many Indian fair trade items to be found at the Welcome Mat, and are a testament to the skill and beauty of the Indian culture.
